If you look around right now, you are likely to see an object made of plastic. It is used, for example, in the manufacture of containers, packaging and a variety of other goods. But what is plastic actually made of?
Plastic is an umbrella term for several different materials that combine to create what we colloquially call plastic. Most often, plastics consist of three or four polymers with additives. The manufacturing process for plastics is generally quick and easy, with less energy required than for the production of other materials.
The long life of plastic is definitely one of its many advantages: it can be recycled and reused, making it a more sustainable option in many respects.
